Google’s annual zeitgeist report has been revealed, with ‘Gangnam Style’ heading off the list of top ten UK Google searches this year.
- Euro 2012
- Olympic tickets
- Whitney Houston
- Kate Middleton
- April Jones
- Netflix
- NatWest Online
- iPad 3
- Gary Barlow
- Gangnam style
The report has also shown Whitney Houston to be the most searched celebrity, Andy Murray the most searched UK Olympian, Usain Bolt the most searched non-UK Olympian and Rio de Janeiro to be the most search travel destination in 2012.
Other search engines have also released their annual report with Yahoo finding the U.S election to be the most searched phrase overall and Kim Kardashian the most searched person.
The Google Zeitgeist report is hugely important to SEO companies as it gives an idea of popular niches and public interest online.
Whilst it was no surprise that the Olympics would be in the top ten, results such as April Jones and Euro 2012 may shock some readers.
Understanding what is of public interest is a key part of content creation and online marketing, and reports by search engines are extremely helpful in providing companies with an idea as to what the people want.
Despite this, with up to 25% of the UK population not yet online, many are complaining that Google’s Zeitgeist report is not a true reflection of public opinion. This is especially true for adult content, which the company refuses to publish details on.
